SOUTH CHINA SEA SECURITY REPORT 2024

2025.01.26

In 2024, the security dynamics of the South China Sea have become increasingly complex and multi-dimensional, marked by heightened geopolitical contests and frequent interactions among stakeholders. Dangerous air and maritime confrontations, alongside sudden incidents, have exacerbated tensions, significantly increasing the risk of armed conflict. Consequently, the regional security order and peace have come under severe strain.

Beyond these sudden confrontations, disputes and competitions grounded in international law have emerged as defining characteristics. Legal battles over territorial baselines, maritime boundary delimitation, and the legitimacy of sovereignty claims have intensified, underscoring the intricacy and multi-faceted nature of the South China Sea issue. Relations between China and the Philippines have been particularly contentious. Citing its "Maritime Zones Act," the Philippines has strengthened its sovereignty claims over some regions of the Spratly Islands and adjacent waters, drawing vehement opposition from China.
