Annual report of the situation
in South China Sea 2016

2017.01.10

This report analyzes the political and security situations in the South China Sea since 2016. It looks at relevant parties’ reaction and policy direction after the announcement of the outcome of the South China Sea Arbitration, the impact of the arbitration on China’s assertion of the sovereignty in South China Sea, President Duterte’s visit to China and the development trend of Sino-Philippine relations, the U.S.’s reaction to China’s island-building in the South China Sea and its impact, and China-U.S. game in the South China Sea after President Trump takes office and more. This report believes that China’s use of diplomatic means effectively managed the political disorder in the region caused by the arbitration, while the U.S. will constitute a more interfering factor in the region in the next period of time.
