On August 31, Sophie Muller, Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in China, and her delegation visited the Grandview Institution(GVI), where they held discussions with Ren Libo, President of the GVI, and Mao Jing, Director of its European Studies Center, on international peace mediation, refugee affairs, and future cooperation between UNHCR and the GVI.
War often causes large-scale refugee displacement. Peace negotiations are not limited to address issues such as ceasefire lines; the return, integration of refugees and protection of their political rights are also important topics in peace mediation. At the same time, addressing population displacement is not only a humanitarian issue, but also a means of conflict prevention, which can effectively reduce the risk of refugee militarization. UNHCR's long-accumulated professional expertise in these areas makes it an important technical support provider for mediation.
Since officially beginning its work in China in 1979, UNHCR has carried out highly effective cooperation with the Chinese government, successfully implementing multiple international refugee assistance projects supported by China and providing assistance to hundreds of thousands of refugees, internally displaced persons, and others in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, with good results. The areas of assistance include education, health, shelter, emergency supplies, water supply, and food aid.
Guided by the Global Compact on Refugees, UNHCR is actively exploring and continuously expanding cooperation with various types of Chinese institutions. Ms. Muller stated that UNHCR hopes to cooperate with GVI in areas such as conflict analysis and mediation dialogue.
