2025.03.27

On 26 March, Karlis Eihenbaums, Ambassador of Latvia to China, and Egils Leimanis, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Latvia to China, visited Grandview Institution and exchanged views with Ren Libo, President of Grandview Institution, and Mao Jing, Director of the Department of International Cooperation, on the China-Latvian relations, the relations between China-Europe relations, the Ukraine crisis and other issues.

Ambassador Karlis said that people in Latvia are very interested in China and hope to have more exchanges with China. He introduced to the representatives of Grandview Institution that since the independence of Latvia in 1918 and the establishment of the University of Latvia, Professor Pēteris Šmits, as the first generation of Sinologists, laid the foundation of Sinological studies in Latvia. Later, as Latvia's relations with China continued to develop, the second generation of sinologists, including Pēteris Pildegovičs, greatly contributed to the development of sinology in Latvia in various fields, and in 2011 Pildegovičs assisted in the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia, of which he serves as the foreign director. He was also involved in the preparation of the Latvian Embassy in China. His book My China Storydocumented his diplomatic and journalistic career in China, the dramatic changes in China over the past decades, and the growing Sino-Latvian friendship.
