On March 10, 2026, the Grandview Institution (GVI) visited the East Asia Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Balthasar Staehelin, Head of the ICRC East Asia Delegation, along with Deputy Head Boris Kelecevic and others, gave the delegation a brief introduction to the ICRC’s work around the world. They highlighted in particular the organization’s large-scale humanitarian operations in Ukraine following the outbreak of the Russia–Ukraine conflict, including providing humanitarian assistance, protecting prisoners of war and civilians, and facilitating the return of fallen soldiers’ remains.
Ren Libo, President of the GVI, introduced the think tank’s recent work on key issues such as China–U.S. relations, China–Europe relations, and maritime affairs, with a particular focus on research and exchanges related to the Russia–Ukraine conflict and the South China Sea. The two sides also held in-depth discussions on their respective understandings of conflict mediation and the roles of different actors in the mediation process, and explored prospects for future cooperation.
Founded in 1863 and headquartered in Switzerland, the ICRC is a neutral and independent humanitarian organization. It provides both emergency and long-term assistance to victims of armed conflicts and other situations of violence worldwide, while promoting international humanitarian law. In certain conflicts, the ICRC also plays a special humanitarian coordination role, such as facilitating prisoner exchanges and coordinating humanitarian corridors.
