The participating experts firstly discussed the issue of Brexit in the UK. Qu Bing, Associate Research Professor of Institute of European Studies in CICIR, elaborated and analyzed the latest news of the Brexit. He believes that the Brexit Agreement is full of uncertainty. The postponement of voting is intended to win more negotiation time, but forced by time, the parties to the game may make final decisions at the close of the date.
Wang Shuo, Deputy Director of Institute of European Studies in CICIR
Wang Shuo, Deputy Director of Institute of European Studies in CICIR, responded that no matter whether the UK will be hard or soft Brexit, the no-deal Brexit is the most undesired results. He believes that Theresa Mary May attempt to buy time to avoid the worst outcome of Brexit.
Cui Hongjian, director of the Department of European Studies in China Institute of International Studies (CIIS)
Cui Hongjian, director of the Department of European Studies in China Institute of International Studies (CIIS), made a concluding remark for the first part of the seminar. He believes that Brexit exposed problems in the process of European integration. Since the Brexit issue has broken out two years, the British government and parties cannot reach a consensus on the core interests of the UK. This ambiguity attitude increased the risk of no deal to leave the EU. Cui Hongjian suggested that Brexit should solve the problem of how to break away from Europe firstly, and then explore the future development of Britain and Europe.
Chen Xin, director of Economic Division of Institute of European Studies in Chinese Academy of Social Science
Subsequently, experts turned their views on Opportunities and Challenges of China-EU Relations. Chen Xin, director of Economic Division of Institute of European Studies in Chinese Academy of Social Science, analyzed the situation in Europe from an economic perspective. He believes that although the European economy has grown steadily and employment rate improved in the past decade, the future of the European economy is full of uncertainty. European debt problem is not optimistic, and the gap between the rich and the poor will continue to expand. Especially in the German automotive industry, the future may be a hidden danger due to the lack of strong support from Internet technology.
Kong Tianping, professor of Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Science
Kong Tianping, professor of Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Science, elaborated on the issues in Central and Eastern Europe. He believes that in the process of European integration, countries represented by Poland and Hungary, show a development model different from Western Europe – the effect of national centralization is enhanced. Since of Sino-US trade friction escalated, China's cooperation with Central and Eastern Europe is full of new opportunities.
Zhao Chen, chief of Department of European International Relations in Chinese Academy of Social Science
Zhao Chen, chief of Department of European International Relations in Chinese Academy of Social Science, focused on the analysis of the Future Development of China-US-Europe Relations. He thinks that China and Europe have great potential and complementarity for cooperation in the economy. On the one hand, European companies are highly effective and have strong appeal to Chinese companies; on the other hand, European companies want to learn innovative industrial integration experience from China, to establish complementary cooperation and create more benefits.
Chen Xinwang, deputy secretary-general of the European Research Center in Grandview Institution Liu Yun, Associate Research Professor of Institute of Northeast Asian Studies in CICIR
